Over 3,000 survivors of the Yelewata community, displaced by a deadly attack by suspected armed herders on June 13, 2025, are resisting calls from traditional rulers to return home from a temporary camp at the International Market in Makurdi.

The camp has been invaded by non-survivors, including market women and criminals, who are consuming humanitarian aid meant for the displaced.

Survivors who protested the return directive, citied inadequate security in their community. The State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the pressure from traditional rulers, but the displaced insist on government assurances of safety before returning.
