former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.) has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare insecurity a national emergency due to ongoing insurgency and banditry, warning that without a long-term strategy, the crisis could persist.
Speaking on national Television Sunrise he emphasized the need for nationwide mobilization, comparing it to Nigeria’s COVID-19 response and Maiduguri flood relief efforts. Recent attacks, including 50 deaths in a Katsina mosque and 15 in Plateau villages, underscore the urgency.
While Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa linked the violence surge to political motives ahead of the 2027 elections, he alleged some politicians fuel chaos to discredit the government. Buratai further stressed that defeating terrorism requires collective action, including psychological mobilization via media and community support, beyond just military efforts.
