Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plans to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. This move, aimed at preserving the hopes of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was met with backlash from both Israel and the United States. Israel criticized the decision, arguing it legitimized Hamas, while U.S. President Donald Trump warned that it could complicate trade negotiations.

Carney emphasized that Canada’s decision was driven by the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need for coordinated international action. He also highlighted the importance of Palestinian reforms, including elections in 2026 and the demilitarization of a future Palestinian state.

Canada joins France in signaling support for Palestinian statehood, while the UK also plans to recognize Palestine unless Israel takes certain steps.
