In Malawi’s recent presidential election, the main candidates—President Lazarus Chakwera and former President Peter Mutharika—have claimed victory, prompting criticism from the electoral commission, which has not yet announced official results.
The election was closely contested, with over 99% of votes counted, but results remain pending amid the country’s economic struggles. The electoral commission has however, urged patience and respect for the counting process, with results expected within seven days. The race involved 17 candidates, and a candidate must secure over 50% of votes to win; otherwise, a runoff will be held. This election follows a contentious 2019 vote that was annulled due to irregularities.
