Nigeria has experienced a significant 26.5% increase in crude oil imports in the first half of 2025 (H1’25), totaling 5,665,602 metric tons compared to 4,478,413 metric tons during the same period in 2024.
This rise is largely attributed to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, imports crude from countries such as the United States, Brazil, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
However, a recent quarterly analysis presents a complex picture. In Quarter 1 2025, crude imports declined by 30%, dropping to 2,400,553 metric tons from 3,037,209 metric tons in Quarter 1 2024, based on data from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). Conversely, in Quarter 2 2025, imports surged by 126%, reaching 3,265,099 metric tons—more than double the 1,441,204 metric tons recorded in Quarter 2 2024.
