Spokesperson for Dangote refinery has assured that there would be no petrol shortage despite a strike by Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG)

The strike, which began on Monday and gained support from other unions, coincides with the refinery’s effort to hire its own drivers to distribute gasoline.

The refinery, Africa’s largest with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has helped reduce petrol prices and challenged long-standing industry players, amid concerns over monopoly and past neglect of government-owned refineries. The union alleges Dangote’s new drivers are being hired to prevent union membership, a claim denied by the company. The refinery is also planning to deploy trucks powered by natural gas for distribution, though logistical issues have caused delays. Overall, the situation remains stable with ongoing talks between the union, government, and the refinery.
