Director General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Imo State Chapter Mrs Obioma Okafor, has cautioned Imo residents against using chemicals like calcium carbide to hasten fruit ripening.
In an interview with our reporter she emphasized that using such chemicals is illegal and constitutes a criminal offense.
Mrs Okafor also urged fruit sellers and buyers to report any instances of chemical ripening as She noted that fruits should be naturally ripened, with no shortcuts for profit.
Recall that the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Mr Olatunji Bello also gave the warning on Monday at a one-day sensitisation programme on food quality standards, organised by the agency in Ado-Ekiti
