Former Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency Baltasar Engonga faces 18 years in prison for corruption. Detained since September 2024 at Black Beach Prison, he appeared in Malabo court for embezzlement, unlawful enrichment, and abuse of power during his tenure from 2015 to 2020.
Prosecutors detailed a scheme to divert public funds, recommending an 18-year sentence and a fine of over 910 million CFA francs ($1.5 million), plus a ban from public office. Six other former officials are also on trial for similar charges. The trial, expected to last three days, continues this week.
Recall , over 400 sextapes involving high-profile women were found in Engonga’s possession during the fraud investigation.
