European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has on Wednesday vowed that the EU will continue supporting Ukraine and pressuring Russia until a “just and lasting peace” is achieved. She described a revised US peace plan as a “starting point” for negotiations but warned that Russia shows no real intention to end the war.
Von der Leyen emphasized that Europe stands with Ukraine “every step of the way” and highlighted ongoing efforts to refine the US plan as groundwork for a potential settlement.
The EU is also preparing a €140-billion ($162 billion) loan to fund Kyiv using frozen Russian assets, though approval has been delayed by Belgium. Von der Leyen stressed that European taxpayers alone will not shoulder the cost. She added that the implementation of any future peace treaty will largely depend on the European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)underscoring the principle: “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. Nothing about Europe without Europe.”
