United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Information haste launched a two-day regional workshop in Kano on Monday, September 1, 2025, to train journalists from Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, and the FCT on ethical reporting of stories involving children.

Held at Tahir Guest Palace, the workshop emphasizes protecting children’s rights and dignity over sensationalism. UNICEF’s Kano Field Office Head, Rahama Muhammad, highlighted that ethical journalism builds trust, protects vulnerable children, and enhances credibility amid misinformation. He urged journalists to avoid publishing identifying details of children affected by violence or abuse to prevent re-traumatization and stigma, and to support laws protecting children’s rights.

Meanwhile Representative from Federal Ministry of Information Toye Falayi stressed balancing compelling storytelling with journalistic integrity and understanding child protection laws.
