Far-right German politician Maximilian Krah has testified in court that he had no knowledge of his former aide Jian Guo allegedly spying for China while working in his Brussels office during Krah’s term as a Member of the European Parliament (2019–2024). Krah claimed he learned of the allegations from the media and was never warned by authorities.
Prosecutors allege that Guo, a German national, worked for Chinese intelligence since 2002, passing over 500 sensitive documents and European Parliament information to Beijing. He also allegedly handled Yaqi X., a Chinese national accused of spying on German defense companies and leaking logistics data from Leipzig-Halle airport.
The trial is set to run through September. Guo faces up to 10 years in prison; Yaqi X. could get up to 5 years. Separately, Krah is also under investigation for money laundering and bribery, which he claims are politically motivated.
