Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, following a five-member commission’s investigation that substantiated allegations of falsifying judicial records and misusing public funds. The commission, chaired by a Supreme Court judge, recommended her removal under Article 146(1) for misbehavior.

The dismissal, effective immediately, is the first of a sitting Chief Justice in Ghana’s history. While Mahama, who assumed office in January, has vowed to combat corruption, and it remains   unclear if Torkonoo will face criminal prosecution.
