provisional results of Guinea’s constitutional referendum show over 90% of voters approving a measure that could allow junta leader Mamadi Doumbouya to run for president.
With a high turnout of 91.4%, the referendum passes with 90.06% ‘yes’ votes. The vote is part of Guinea’s transition from military to civilian rule amid regional instability, with critics viewing it as a power grab and opposition parties boycotting it due to repression and disbandment. Doumbouya, who seized power in 2021, has not confirmed if he will run in upcoming elections, which are scheduled later this year but without a fixed date.
The referendum extends presidential terms and establishes a Senate, amid concerns over authoritarian practices and suppression of opposition voices.
