Tanzanian authorities have charged hundreds of people, including opposition officials and an influential preacher, with treason related to protests over disputed elections last month amid escalating political tensions and violence that may have resulted in over 1,000 deaths.

Key opposition figures, such as Chadema’s leader Tundu Lissu and officials Brenda Rupia and John Mnyika, face arrest warrants, while some, including Lissu, are already jailed. The government claims to be working to restore harmony, but rights groups and observers report widespread repression, extrajudicial killings, and a high death toll, with estimates ranging from hundreds to thousands.

In the meantime, the elections, has been criticised by the African Union and rights organizations, over allegations of ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and irregularities.
