Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has announced that the service’s legal department will prosecute officers issuing Nigerian passports to non-citizens, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for such misconduct.
Speaking at a three-day workshop in Abuja themed “Strengthening Identity Management Through Innovations in Passport Administration,” Nandap stressed the importance of thorough vetting to ensure passports are issued only to bona fide Nigerians, as fraudulent issuances have been linked to criminal activities and illegal migration.
Recall A 2022 probe revealed 7,000 suspected cases of non-Nigerians obtaining passports, with some linked to trafficking networks. Nandap urged officers to enhance vigilance, leverage professional skills to detect fraud, and adapt to technological advancements like contactless passport systems.
