Imo State government, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has inaugurated 135 Local Government Emergency Management Committee (LGEMC) responders across the state’s 27 council areas to tackle floods and environmental disasters.
The responders, trained over two days in Owerri, were equipped with fire blankets, extinguishers, reflective jackets, first aid kits, and other emergency tools.
Meanwhile NEMA’s Abia/Imo head, Nnamdi Igwe, said the initiative will ensure faster interventions in rural areas, as the LGEMCs will replicate NEMA’s work at the grassroots. He noted the model will be rolled out nationwide.
Igwe urged the responders to take the assignment seriously and appealed to residents to provide timely information to help reduce deaths and injuries during emergencies.
