Independent national electoral commission (INEC )Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to inclusive democracy, with a focus on boosting women’s participation in politics and party leadership.
Speaking during a visit by the Women’s Collective Forum in Abuja, Yakubu highlighted that women currently lead 55% of INEC’s departments and directorates, including many state administrative secretary positions. He noted INEC’s institutional frameworks for gender inclusion, including a Department of Gender and Inclusivity and an updated gender policy.
Yakubu said INEC continues to urge political parties to promote women within their leadership, though more progress is needed. He also advocated for constitutional and electoral reforms to support affirmative action, stressing that legal provisions are necessary to guarantee women’s representation in elective offices.
He revealed INEC has already backed legislative efforts to enhance women’s political participation and assured continued partnership with advocacy groups.
