Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has revealed that approximately 67% of inmates in Nigeria’s correctional facilities are awaiting trial.
Speaking on national television , he emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments to improve correctional services.
Tunji-Ojo further noted that about 72% of inmates are state offenders, with two-thirds of the prison population awaiting trial, primarily under federal responsibility. He additionally stressed the need for a shared strategy and cooperation with state governors to address these challenges, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering results without making excuses.
