Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that Iran cannot fully cut ties with the United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog, the  International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) but the return of its inspectors depends on a decision by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

This follows Iran’s suspension of cooperation with the IAEA nearly two months ago, after a 12-day war with Israel in June 2025, citing the IAEA’s failure to condemn Israeli and U.S. strikes on its nuclear facilities. The attacks by Israel targeted Iranian nuclear and military sites, while the U.S. struck facilities at Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz, derailing talks on a new nuclear deal.

Iran plans to install new fuel rods at its Bushehr nuclear plant, requiring IAEA inspectors. Cooperation with the IAEA will take “a new form,” with ongoing consultations. Meanwhile Britain, France, and Germany have threatened to reinstate UN sanctions if Iran does not comply with uranium enrichment and IAEA cooperation terms.
