Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports as “tariff blackmail” during a BRICS leaders’ virtual meeting with China’s Xi Jinping, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa.
The tariffs, aimed at punishing Brazil for prosecuting former President Jair Bolsonaro on coup plot charges, caused an 18.5% drop in Brazil’s exports to the US in August. Bolsonaro’s trial verdict is expected this week.
Brazil is mulling retaliatory measures and has appealed to the World Trade Organization for dispute resolution.
