The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has declared a nationwide strike starting today Monday, in response to the dismissal of over 800 workers at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which the union claims violates labor laws and international conventions.
The strike involves halting crude oil and gas supplies to the refinery, leading to significant disruptions in Nigeria’s energy sector. As a result, power generation from thermal plants has ceased, threatening widespread blackouts and economic hardship. The union has also directed members involved in field operations to stop work and hold a prayer vigil. The strike might cause slow operations at Dangote refinery and fertilizer plant, with ongoing tensions over worker reinstatement, and discussions with government officials today Monday 29th already scheduled to address the crisis.
