Many roads leading to and from Nairobi’s central business district have been sealed off by police, with long queues of cars and security personnel installing metal spikes across streets.
Heavy police presence has also been reported at key intersections, roundabouts, and roads leading to State House, the Kenyan president’s residence.
According to reports, Tens of thousands are expected to rally against President William Ruto’s government, accusing it of corruption and brutality, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1990 ‘Saba Saba’ protests demanding free elections.
Prior today, Ruto, became unpopular after proposing controversial tax increase , defended the new taxes as necessary, despite past protests forcing the government to abandon similar measures.
