National Assembly has held an emotional session on Wednesday to honor former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at 82 in a London hospital after a long illness.
In the Senate, lawmakers, led by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, praised Buhari’s legacy as a military leader and two-term president, urging President Bola Tinubu to immortalize him by naming a national monument after him. A condolence register was opened, and a minute of silence was observed. Senate President Godswill Akpabio also commended Tinubu for organizing a befitting state funeral and highlighted Buhari’s compassion and integrity.
In the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, presiding over a valedictory session, lauded Buhari’s respect for legislative independence and his role in deepening democracy through signing 129 bills, including key laws like the Electoral Act (2022) and Petroleum Industry Act (2021). Lawmakers across both chambers praised Buhari’s integrity, anti-corruption efforts, and contributions to national unity, such as establishing the North East Development Commission.
