The National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitution Review met on Monday in Abuja to finalise the draft of proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution, moving closer to its December 2025 deadline. Committee leaders announced that the review process has entered its concluding phase, and no further submissions will be accepted.

Senate Deputy President and Committee Chairman Senator Barau Jibrin said the meeting marked the completion of deliberations, with the amendment bills scheduled to be transmitted to State Houses of Assembly later this year. He noted that most contentious issues had already been resolved at last month’s Lagos retreat.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, described the session as the “final retreat” before lawmakers vote on constitutional alteration bills. He highlighted the extensive nationwide consultations—six zonal public hearings, multiple technical retreats, and engagements with governors, political leaders, security agencies, CSOs, traditional rulers, women’s groups, and others
