National Assembly has announced that Nigeria is set to enact Africa’s first comprehensive legal framework for the digital economy and e-governance through the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill 2025, which is expected to be sent to President Bola Tinubu for assent this week.
The bill, jointly prepared by the Senate and House Committees on ICT and Cybersecurity, aims to digitise government operations, strengthen ICT coordination, and address gaps in infrastructure and data integration across ministries and agencies.
At a public hearing in Abuja, committee chairmen Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu and Hon. Adedeji Olajide confirmed that the bill would be passed for third reading and harmonisation within the week. The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, said the legislation would help actualise the government’s vision of a $1 trillion economy and raise the digital economy’s contribution to GDP from 19 per cent to 21 per cent by 2027
