Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has eliminated all unregistered SIMs from the country’s telecom network, a move aimed at enhancing national and cybersecurity, according to Executive Vice Chairman Aminu Maida.
While unregistered SIMs are no longer active, some subscribers may use false names to mask identities, which Maida noted is illegal. The NCC cannot control registered names but emphasized that using fake identities for calls is an offense. To improve industry stability, the NCC will launch a public map in September showing network coverage and tariff plans, enabling subscribers to choose based on quality and cost. The Commission has also revised corporate governance guidelines to boost transparency and investor confidence, requiring operators to submit audited reports.
A recent tariff adjustment was approved to reflect costs after over a decade without updates, balancing operator and subscriber needs. The NCC plans to engage state governors to protect telecom infrastructure and address multiple taxation for better service delivery and security.
