Director General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, has announced that the agency has begun enforcement discussions with state governments and private sector employers to ensure full implementation of Nigeria’s mandatory health insurance policy.

Previously voluntary, low coverage levels, especially in the private sector, are now being addressed through enforcement and awareness efforts.

The NHIA is collaborating with government bodies and employer groups to establish frameworks for compliance and is also promoting voluntary enrollment through advocacy, making registration easier for individuals and small businesses.

Recall the agency has recently increased provider tariffs to improve care quality and build public trust. However, as a result of these efforts, health insurance coverage has grown from 16.7 million to 19.4 million Nigerians within a year, with increased awareness and strategic partnerships playing key roles.
