President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has criticized Nigeria’s low power generation of 4,500–5,000 MW, arguing that the country should aim for 50,000–60,000 MW.
Speaking during a tour of the Dangote Refinery in Lagos, he noted that his conglomerate alone generates over 1,500 MW for internal use, demonstrating the potential for large-scale power projects. He emphasized that building Nigeria’s power infrastructure to 25,000–30,000 MW is less challenging than constructing the refinery and urged greater private sector involvement, given the sector’s privatization. Dangote criticized capital flight, urging wealthy Nigerians to invest locally rather than stashing funds abroad, as this stunts economic growth.
He also highlighted corruption, noting that stolen funds hidden overseas do not benefit Nigeria’s economy.
