Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has announced that it will proceed with strike starting today Monday, despite efforts by the Federal Government to mediate. NUPENG’s President, Williams Akporeha, confirmed that while the government had reached out to address their concerns, the union’s industrial action would go ahead pending a meeting scheduled for today .

The strike threat arose from disputes over Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s plan to import natural gas-powered trucks for fuel distribution, and the refinery’s alleged anti-union practices, including prohibiting new drivers from joining unions and forcing recruits to sign non-union agreements. NUPENG warned it would halt fuel loading nationwide if the issues remained unresolved.

In response, the Minister of Labour, Muhammad Dingyadi, called for a conciliation meeting involving all parties and urged NUPENG to postpone the strike, warning that a shutdown could cause widespread hardship and revenue loss. He further assured that the government aims to resolve the dispute amicably and prevent a nationwide fuel crisis.
