Member of the House of Representatives and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Army, David Ogewu has cautioned that any move by the United States to re-designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” could worsen insecurity and fuel violence.
Speaking on NATIONAL TELEVISION Ogewu revealed that he raised the issue during a high-level meeting in Washington, D.C., held between April and May, where Nigerian lawmakers met with U.S. congressional offices, intelligence officials, and State Department representatives.
He said he challenged what he described as “misleading narratives” about Nigerian soldiers’ professionalism and highlighted the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity and improve troop welfare.
Ogewu warned that labelling Nigeria as a CPC under the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) — which targets countries accused of “systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations” of religious freedom — could invite further unrest. Instead, he urged the U.S. to strengthen intelligence-sharing and diplomatic cooperation with Nigeria
