President Bola Tinubu has officially abolished the 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, aimed at alleviating financial burdens on consumers and the digital economy. The move was confirmed by NCC Executive Vice-Chairman Aminu Maida, who stated that the duty, initially suspended in 2023, has now been permanently removed under revised tax laws.
The duty had faced opposition from industry stakeholders and consumer groups, who warned it would raise costs and harm telecom operators. However, Tinubu had first suspended the tax in July 2023 to support economic growth, but it was proposed for reinstatement in 2024, which met resistance from the telecom sector.
