South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially closed the first G20 summit held on the African continent, which broke tradition by issuing a leaders’ declaration on the first day despite US opposition.

The summit which happened between 22nd through to 23rd focused on themes like climate change, global inequality, and peace, with Ramaphosa emphasizing a renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation and concrete actions to improve global lives.

Additionally, the traditional gavel handover to the next host, the US, was skipped due to the US boycott, which was in protest of South Africa’s stance on a perceived persecution of white Afrikaners and related diplomatic tensions. Meanwhile, the US will take over as G20 president in 2026 and plans to host the summit in Florida.
