U.S. President Donald Trump is intensifying his tariff policies by proposing over 10 percent duties on imports from smaller nations, including several in Africa and the Caribbean, aiming for “reciprocal” treatment.

Some African countries, like Lesotho, face potential tariffs as high as 50 percent, though these are currently on hold for a period of a three-month consultation.

While Trump indicates he may set a uniform tariff for all affected countries, the move has raised concerns among affected nations and international bodies; the WTO has further urged the U.S. to exempt African countries, warning that such tariffs could harm developing economies and undo progress.
