President Bola Tinubu has urged the National Assembly to review Nigeria’s laws to enable states to establish their own police forces as part of a nationwide effort to tackle rising insecurity.
The call was included in a statement issued on Wednesday declaring a national security emergency.
Tinubu said his administration will support states that already operate security outfits and encouraged religious and educational institutions in high-risk areas to ensure constant police presence. He also advised states to reconsider placing boarding schools in remote, poorly secured locations.
As part of the broader security strategy, the president approved the recruitment of 20,000 additional police officers—bringing total new recruits to 50,000—and authorised the temporary use of NYSC camps as police training facilities. He also directed the Department of State Services to deploy and expand a force of trained forest guards to combat terrorists and bandits hiding in forests
