Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to the Republic of Benin to help restore stability following an attempted military coup.
The vote was unanimous, and the approval will allow Nigeria, along with troops from Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana, to participate in ECOWAS’s standby force.
With president Tinubu emphasizing Nigeria’s historic responsibility under ECOWAS to assist Benin, which experienced a brief military takeover attempt that was quickly contained, ECOWAS has ordered the immediate deployment of its regional force to support Benin’s government, highlighting regional solidarity and the urgency of external intervention to prevent further instability.
