Group of Rivers State indigenes has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the planned local government elections scheduled for August 30, 2025, by the Rivers State Government under Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (retd.).

The plaintiffs, represented by lawyer Sunday Ezema, argue that the ongoing state of emergency, declared by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, due to a breakdown of public order and safety, makes it unlawful to hold elections. They contend that the emergency conditions persist, as the proclamation has not been revoked, rendering the environment unsuitable for voters.

The plaintiffs seek a court order to halt the elections or declare them null if conducted during the emergency period, citing the unconstitutionality of such actions. The suit names President Tinubu, the Rivers State Government, and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission as defendants.
