Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), led by Chairman Michael Odey, has rescheduled the local government election from August 9, 2025, to August 30, 2025, due to a state of emergency and potential unrest in Rivers State.
The decision was made under Section 13 Sub 5 of the RSIEC Law, which allows postponement in cases of crisis or natural disaster. The election will cover all 23 local government areas, electing one councillor per ward and a chairman and vice chairman for each council.
Odey emphasized RSIEC’s commitment to a free, fair, transparent, and inclusive electoral process, ensuring voters can cast ballots without intimidation. A revised timetable was unveiled, and the commission will collaborate with stakeholders to ensure a credible election.
