Spokesperson for the 10th National Assembly, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, has stated that the Senate has received approximately 61 proposals for state creation across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, but none have yet passed the legislative process.

The Senate emphasizes that state creation is complex, requiring thorough demographic, geographic, and historical analysis, followed by public hearings.

The process involves a constitutional review with stakeholders, rather than unilateral action by the Senate. So far, the proposals will be reviewed and filtered by the Constitutional Review Committee, led by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, before any recommendations are made. No states have been officially recommended for creation at this stage, and final decisions will depend on the outcomes of upcoming public hearings and consultations.
