Residents have demanded a constitution that enforces rotational presidency among Nigeria’s geopolitical zones and grants full autonomy to local governments. These demands were raised during the South-East Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Enugu.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu emphasized the importance of rotational presidency and governorship to promote fairness, unity, and inclusion, advocating for increased seats for women in legislative bodies to enhance gender parity. He also called for true local government autonomy, direct funding access, and devolved powers to strengthen states.

Additionally, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi proposed creation of an additional state in the region and reserving seats for women in politics. Meanwhile, the event aimed to gather regional input for constitutional amendments, with participation from officials, traditional rulers, NGOs, and civil society.
