Nine Nigerian states have not yet implemented the new minimum wage of N70,000 for teachers, months after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the law into effect.
The data from the National Union of Teachers (NUT) reveals that some states are still paying old wages, such as N18,000, or have not upgraded to the N30,000 previously approved.
Notably, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Nasarawa, Yobe, and Zamfara states, among others, have yet to implement the new wage. In Adamawa, teachers received N30,000 but not the current N70,000. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) teachers recently ended a strike after area councils agreed to reduce revenue to fund teacher salaries. Overall, the delayed implementation has led to ongoing teacher unrest and dissatisfaction across several states.
