Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has urgently called for government and security intervention due to a rising wave of vandalism and theft targeting critical telecom infrastructure across the country.

Between May and July 2025, multiple attacks on cell sites in various states have disrupted services, caused network blackouts, and hindered connectivity, threatening a nationwide network collapse.

Thieves are stealing essential components like cables, batteries, solar panels, and diesel, which are vital for Nigeria’s communications, security, and digital economy. ALTON warns that these crimes undermine ongoing industry expansions and impact essential services such as banking, emergency response, healthcare, and education. The association also cautions against participation in the black market for stolen telecom equipment, emphasizing that such acts are serious criminal offenses with severe legal consequences.
