U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of “very severe consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine during their upcoming summit in Alaska on Friday.
This marks their first direct talks since Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025. Trump emphasized the meeting as an opportunity to gauge Putin’s willingness to end the Ukraine war but did not specify potential consequences, such as sanctions or tariffs. Although Trump previously threatened sanctions on Moscow if Putin did not engage in negotiations, a deadline last Friday passed without action. Ceasefire talks have been stalled by the Kremlin.
A prior call involving Trump, European officials, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky occurred was described by Trump as “very good,” but Zelensky will not attend the Alaska summit.
