U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited his trade war by threatening higher tariffs on over a dozen countries, including allies like Japan and South Korea, with duties ranging from 25% to 40% set to take effect on August 1.
The tariffs, initially announced on April 2 as part of “Liberation Day” with a baseline 10% tariff on all countries, were suspended for 90 days but are now poised to resume at steeper rates.
Trump sent letters to nations like Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, South Africa, Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia, warning of tariffs (e.g., 25% for Japan and South Korea, 36% for Thailand) unless trade deals are negotiated.
