Uganda’s electoral commission has announced January 15 as the date for the country’s general elections.
Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986 and now Africa’s fourth longest-ruling leader, is seeking re-election. His government has amended the constitution to remove age and term limits.
Museveni, credited with stabilizing Uganda and boosting the economy, faces main challenger Bobi Wine, a former rebel and pop star turned politician, who alleges election fraud in previous polls. Six other candidates are also running, alongside elections for parliament.
