United Nigeria Airlines has signed an agreement with Southwest Airlines to purchase six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a significant step in its fleet expansion.

The deal, announced at Southwest’s headquarters in Dallas, aims to boost the airline’s domestic, regional, and international operations. The fuel-efficient Boeing 737-800, capable of seating up to 189 passengers and flying approximately 2,935 nautical miles, will enhance capacity, reduce costs, and support Nigeria’s aviation growth.

Executive Chairman Prof. Obiora Okonkwo stated that this move allows the airline to scale operations and offer better travel options. The partnership includes ongoing technical support, maintenance, and crew training from Southwest. He also revealed plans to acquire four more Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft by early 2027, aiming for a total fleet of ten aircraft as part of a broader expansion strategy.
