United States has deployed disaster relief teams to the Caribbean following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced. He said the U.S. is coordinating with the governments of Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and The Bahamas, sending rescue teams and lifesaving supplies, though Cuba was not mentioned.
According to State Department officials, dozens of U.S. personnel from Los Angeles, Virginia, and a regional hub in Costa Rica are being sent to assist with rescue operations and damage assessments.
The relief effort comes despite complications from a U.S. government shutdown, which has slowed logistics. Rubio and President Donald Trump—who previously cut most foreign aid programs—have pledged to maintain targeted emergency assistance for crisis situations like this.
