Venezuela has condemned the United States’ decision to label the alleged “Cartel of the Suns” as a foreign terrorist organisation, calling the designation a “ridiculous lie” and claiming it is meant to justify an illegal intervention. Washington alleges, without publicly released evidence, that the cartel is linked to President Nicolás Maduro, framing the move as part of its anti-drug and anti-immigration campaign.
The designation comes as the US conducts a major military buildup in the Caribbean, deploying the world’s largest aircraft carrier and other forces. Although the US says the operation targets drug trafficking, Venezuelan authorities believe it may be aimed at toppling Maduro.
