Oyo State Government has rejected proposals to extend the retirement age for teachers and other civil servants from 60 to 65 years, unlike some other states.

Speaking at a conference in Ibadan, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Segun Olayiwola, said the State Executive Council debated the matter across five meetings and concluded that such an extension would block employment opportunities for younger graduates.

He argued that if implemented, many retiring workers would stay on for another five years, depriving thousands of job seekers of opportunities—such as the 15,000 teachers recently employed in the state.

In contrast, Ekiti and Niger States have already approved the new retirement age for teachers, while the Federal Government earlier extended it for clinically skilled health workers.
