Andy Burnham has officially become the new leader of the UK’s ruling Labour Party and the country’s next Prime Minister, succeeding Keir Starmer, who resigned last month following political turmoil.
The former Manchester mayor, popularly known as the “King of the North,” pledged to restore hope, improve living standards across the UK, and pursue greater devolution of powers to cities and regions. Burnham, who secured overwhelming backing from Labour MPs, will formally assume office on Monday after meeting King Charles III, becoming the UK’s seventh prime minister in a decade.
His administration will inherit major challenges, including a sluggish economy, rising welfare costs, high government borrowing, illegal migration, and increasing political pressure from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
