UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has congratulated Andy Burnham on becoming Britain’s new prime minister while pledging to hold his government accountable as Leader of the Opposition.
In a statement on Monday, Badenoch wished Burnham success but said Britain needs “a leader who can take difficult decisions, not a people pleaser.”
She welcomed reports that the new prime minister plans to approve licences for the Jackdaw and Rosebank North Sea gas fields but urged him to fully lift restrictions on new drilling to help reduce energy costs.
Badenoch also criticised Burnham for taking office without presenting a clear governing agenda and for delaying Prime Minister’s Questions until September, accusing him of avoiding parliamentary and media scrutiny.
